Course Overview: Module 5 – Sister Wendy Beckett: The Hermit Art Critic

______________________________________________________________________

Sister Wendy Beckett was an English hermit who lived on the grounds of a Carmelite monastery in England. She became an unlikely celebrity for some years through a BBC/PBS series that had her visiting museums and reflecting on art. Otherwise, she remained quite hidden from the world--not writing about herself or sharing her interior prayer life. In the last three years of her life, she developed an unlikely friendship with Robert Ellsberg, exchanging emails almost daily. This became the basis of a book published after she died in 2018. Through this work, an unfamiliar Sister Wendy emerges- a spiritual master, a modern mystic, and an extraordinary witness to the gospel message.

Robert Ellsberg is the publisher of Orbis Books, where he has worked for 37 years. He became a Catholic and later studied theology at Harvard Divinity School. Robert also served for two years as managing editor of the Catholic Worker newspaper in those years. He is probably best known for his many books about saints and holy witnesses, including "All Saints," "Blessed Among All Women," "The Saints Guide to Happiness," and "A Living Gospel: Reading God's Story in Holy Lives." His most recent book is "Dearest Sister Wendy... A Surprising Story of Faith and Friendship.”
